Boss HM-2 Issue

I have a Boss HM-2 that visually is doing everything it's supposed to. Powers up with both 9v and adapter, LED comes on, switch turns LED on and off, but no sound comes out with effect engaged or bypassed. If you hit the guitar really hard for a split second you can sorta hear the signal trying to come through, but very soft and muffled. If I hit a different string I can hear the change in pitch faintly, so I do believe it's "trying" to come through. Any ideas?

Insert a signal and trace it through with a scope and see where it gets "lost". If you don't have a scope, use ACV on your DVM.
