Well, Steve has to be a "nerd" in some regard to have managed all this anyway. I remember him proudly posting the new hardware system he acquired for the second incarnation of the forum (it looked like something between the starship Enterprise and the car driven by George Jetson ). So I can't say he wasn't inclined at all or got nothing from it. I only know that the service end of it was something he tried to let go of a few times and occasionally late to get to it. There's the positive aspect of being the most integral part of what has to be the best public information forum in the genre (arguably?). I still think there should be a bronze statue of him with an information placcard in a public park in Utah somewhere

      Not many on here.
      I only see 3-5 at a time, each time I check, Who's On-Line.
Most of the members, must not figured out the tricks on how to get by the expired certificate!
      It's not looking good!

Well there is no answer for this because tboy (Steve) is currently absent. We don't know why yet and this has it's own greater concerns. You've probably already read on this thread that tboy kept the hardware for this site personally. He is also the only administrator. No mod here has any information or administrative powers to secure access to certify anything. So no one other than Steve has any ability to change anything. If you have a suggestion I'm open to it. The domaign is currently running in the Vbulletin cloud (as it were) and expires in approximately ten months. So unless Steve makes an appearance that's the amount of time we have before the site expires. And I expect there may be hitches in the interem due to lack of administrative maintenance. It could be a rough ride with casualties as we've already seen. Hell, we lose members every time there's a format change because it blows minds. Unless tboy magically appears we have a rough road ahead. I'm trying to establish Steve's situation but it's complicated.

We are currently on auto pilot and destined to continue to deteriorate without an administrator as we approach the end of site registration. My hope at this time is to salvage what I can and keep as much of the crew together (here or anywhere) as possible.

I'm open to suggestions if you have any.

Well, sorry for that then. I don't mean to gloom and doom but complaining about what IS to the population when there's no one but YOU to make a difference (as a most empowered moderator) only forcasts failure. Like a plea to a savior that may not even be there.?. We should be focused on the positive of any action that preserves anything rather than bitching about what isn't.

And there's still tboy personally to think about.

            Sorry T. JM2C

It used to be possible to clone certain web site's data and structures to another server without admin rights, but I'm talking about maybe 15 years ago. I did this a few times, though users and credentials had to be set up from scratch and there was a lot of post-transfer tidying up to get a site that would work as some of the data relationships didn't work as expected. I would expect that nowadays this type of access would not be possible - at the very least the high level of traffic may be picked up similar to a denial of service attack. The earlier forums didn't have much in the way of protection and could easily be 'lifted'.

I left my second message on Steve(tboy) home phone.
I asked that anyone from the family to please call me back.
We are all concerned for Steve's Health and well being.
If anyone else wishes to write or call his info is on google for all to see.

The panic and urgency for the well-being of the Music-Electronic-Forum, is getting more critical Every Day!
When the registration for the Forum expires, the forum will go off line, and it will take Administration to get it back.
                  tboy is the sole Administrator.

Does anyone know how much it costs to maintain this site ? DIYAudio has an interesting deal. If you become a paid member, IIRC you get more email storage and no ads. You have to renew every year.
WARNING! Musical Instrument amplifiers contain lethal voltages and can retain them even when unplugged. Refer service to qualified personnel.

I have been a member of DIYAudio for 11 years. I don't see ads and I never had to pay or renew. They recently revamped the site and, at that time, requested that all the members re-verified their email address. The "revamp" appeared to be a lot of work for several computer tech experienced members.

I must have missed that. For a while there was some kind of script on there that would choke my computer if I left the site active on a tab. So I would just kill the tab and come back in a day or two to see if there was any activity on my watched threads. Some ad blockers work better than others. My old Firefox doesn't block on DIYAudio any more but it did on here before the security issue.

Speaking of blockers, I have kept my blocker turned off for MEF because I wanted to support the ad revenue stream. However, I have not seen any ads at all on MEF for quite a while.

Something I noticed at the Sunn site, while I was the only member logged on, the number of "guests" was about double the normal number. I guess 'bots don't care if the security is expired.

They probably prefer that security is expired!

From what i have found to run vbulletin cloud would be anywhere from 360-720 a year( that covers backups domain registration, etc. But unless we get any participation from Tboy we will be starting all over and loosing Ampage, Sunn, schematics and this site.
