  • Shorted windings question

It's been over 2 1/2 years or more since I have wound a pickup and need 1 question answered. Will a winding shorted to the outside magnets cause a darker than normal pickup?
    Thanks for your time.

Ah, I taped the magnets and wound really loose just to be sure nothing would stress the wire and it fixed the problem. Now to figure a more permanent way to do this without all the taping and such. Maybe a triple dip in Lacquer will do the trick, 1 just ain't cutting it.

I use nitro to insulate magnets but on the outer E magnets I give an extra coat with nail varnish if I'm using thinner gauges of wire than 42.

Hey Spence, Nail varnish as in the stuff at the local drug store for fingernails? My daughter probably has some of that here. Does the nitro get really hard and hold good?

Seems I remember maybe Possum saying something about Teflon tape. I may try that as an additional layer of protection being that it is pretty thin stuff.

I use the Hard as nails. It dries real fast. It has many uses.
I use it like lock-tight, on rifle scope mount screws, heck you can even use it on your nails!
Some folks swear on the tape, I thind David uses the scotch magic tape.

Well I couldn't wait a few days and guess what, The sanding sealer failed, but I was told to wait a few days lol. I will still use it and tape I guess. The one I did with tape is just fine, although very light tension was used. I would say it's a keeper but the mid/treble in the 1K range is scooped. Such is life I guess. Back to the old drawing board and try a tighter tension with the tape and see where that gets me.

Thanks again for all the suggestions.

Floral tape huh, hmmm, Wal Mart tomorrow, as bad as I hate that store I guess it wont hurt for 1 thing.

What kind of wire are you using. I have made a bunch with heavy forvar 42 from Mojo and I've beat on them and everything, no tape lacquer on nuttin. Now I have some 42 SPN that is really thin insulation. I haven't used it much with the rod magnet single coils. I have some 42 ga P.E. That sounds wonderful on single coils. I've used the hard as nails with it.
You can get the hard as nails at Wally World also. You can get it in the Cosmetic section!!!
                    Good Luck,

Hi Terry, I am using 43 Awg of that red SPN wire. I know it is probably crap wire and really it's just to get by with until I can fork out the big dollars for the good Enamal and Formvar. I actually have some 42 and 43 Heavy Formvar, some 42 red SPN wire and a tiny bit of PE 42. KNow anywhere I can buy a 5lb roll of PE cheaper than 220.00 a roll?

I'm not too worried about losing the Red 43 SPN but it did it with the 42 as well, again not real worried about that either but I want to get things sorted before I start using the limited supply of my good wire.

ASS-- Thats me, Aint selling shit!! Therefore wire is a premium to me right now lol.

the thing Ive noticed about floral tape the adhesive seems to be wax & its on the outside of the roll , it don't really stick to much only itself , just press it against itself . i use it to wrap the coil after potting as well & it stays ,if you had to repair the pickup by unwinding some wire its very easy to use ...... try it see how it works let me know ....... maybe I'm a nut bar ........... lol

That being Floral tape, Your pickups don't start sprouting, blooming and you don't have to water them daily do you???
