The forum traffic has been pretty light lately.
Hopefully everyone made it through ok, and things can get back to semi normal.

              • In Frederick, MD here and all is well. My office, closer to D.C. was shut down for two days, but I had no issues at my shop here. In fact, it was nice to have a few paid days off to work on pickups, etc.

Those I know in NY and NJ are doing ok, but certainly, there is a great deal of damage there.

                    • Latest project is a couple of tele bridge mini rail humbuckers. One has a Ceramic 8 magnet, the other one has Alnico 3. Just need one but couldn't decide on the magnet. The way these go together, it turned out to be easier to make two than to change out the mag. Anyway finished them up, and will install them and A-B check them tomorrow, and pick one. Made these more or less very slightly hotter than vintage toned, and left off the steel plate. Customer wants more mids, more sustain, and less overall brightness than the standard Tele bridge he has, but not to get completely away from the tele tone. Neck pickup in this guitar is the wide range hb.

                      • Hi Sonny.
Somehow you got some narrow A3? Cool!

I have a rail in the bridge of my tele. I wound as much 43ga on as I could. It is a deathmetal machine!

                        Cheers,

I'm not far enough along to say what mine will sound like yet. I have a fallback plan if I can't get the humbucker part like I want though. It can be a regular strat. I haven't made any of the single coil sized blade humbuckers yet. They will have 44 Electricsola wire and ceramic mags, mostly Mojo parts. I'm chroming the blades too. I've got that part done now. So I have no idea yet what will come of that. But we will see. It may be a bust, maybe I will need to try several winds, but got to try different things or no progress will be forthcoming.
                            Hi Sonny,

Big_T and I were winding rails like madmen for awhile there! May I advise you against 44ga? It may work out for you, but from my experience it may be too brootal. A normal PAF humbucker is wound with 5000/5000 42ga and will be similar to a strat sized C8 rail with 4100/4100 42ga. A strat sized rail with 6200/6200 43ga sounds like a Seymour Duncan JB (44ga A5)... except more broootal and awesome! Big T helped me tame my rail pickups down, rails can sound pretty freakin great through my dual-rectifier, if you get my drift

                            cheers,

                            • HahaHey Terry!

It is dangerous! It's like,"where is the clean channel?" That IS the clean channel? Then they look at you like you are addicted to distortion and you don't appreciate the finer things in life, like chimey cleans. ...Sad, but true. *sigh

Glad to hear you are winding some strats up! I'm working on a strat neck. I want it to match a humbucker bridge I have. You know match the 500k pot value and be smoking awesome! The notes just flying off the fingerboard like hot melted lazer-beam encapsulated gummy bears of tone! Any advise? I am getting really nice results with the 42HPN you recommended Thanks for that!

So Terry, How do I go about posting pictures? How do you do it? I'll just do it the way you do. Thanks

                              Keep warm, buddy!

For this one, I cut down an A3 humbucker bar, using the dremel tool cutoff wheels. Had to be careful with the measurements, it was kind of tricky and it took 3 of the cutoff disks to do the job, but it worked out fine. Don't know if I would want to do that job very often, but for one or two it works. I picked A3 to be kind of between A2 and A5. I used 43 SPN, and had plenty of extra room left, wound them to 5750 per coil. Hotter than a P.A.F., but not by a lot and not as much as Seymours hot rails version, or even the Dimarzio tonezone model that's similar. The customer wanted more mids and sustain, with less brightness, and not to get completely away from the tele sound. But he didn't want metal at all. He was already familiar with the hot rails. He plays 3 bands, rock and blues mostly, plus praise and an experimental band. Actually both of them worked out fine, and the customer had a very hard time choosing between the two. We put them first in my test strat, and played them through my amp. He picked the A3, which we then installed in his tele, and when he played it through his amp, he really liked it but wanted to try the other one too. I had plenty of time so we swapped it out. He ended up with the ceramic, and is going to gig with it for a month, but he told me not to sell the A3 he might want to change back. And he's a very happy camper so far. The specs are pretty close between the two, they were both about 11K with the 43 awg SPN. Amazingly, the ceramic one still had a good bit of "teleosity" to it. The A3 one was more humbuckery and even a little jazzy.

To your other post about the 44 Awg, yeah I kind of figured that out, after winding up a couple of strat sized ones. There's room for enough 44 to get really into the mud zone.
