I worked on a 69 EB3 bass today.
It is an interesting instrument.
I thought the Sidewinder was going to need rewound when I picked it up yesterday.
The pickup was shorted to ground inside the pickup.
I found that, resoldered, and retaped the lead in wire.
The Pickup Read 30k DCR ohms exactly.
The Mini bucker measured 6.75k.
The bass was very noisy when I got it, I rewired the cavity.
The original 4 way switch was defective, so the guitar shop put in a cheaply made 3 way rotary to replace it.
It was bad also, the contacts wadded up internally, and you couldn't tighten it up enough to keep it from turning.
So for now it has a mdeium height 3-way toggle switch like goes in a LP, or SG guitar, and it works great!
It had a bad noisy Vol. Pot, for the Sidewinder, so I put a 500k in it.
There is no shielding at all, in the main cavity, or the pickup cavities.
I used shielded wire from the jack to the switch, and short PVC hookup wire in the cavity.
When done, I tested it, and it is very quiet, no noticeable noise, or hum.
The Side winder is very strong, and I see why they call them mudbuckers!
Sounds good for a vintage Era Humbucker Bass.
Much more distorted sounding than my modern Ibanez Bass with humbucker soapbars.

I moved the Les Paul/the Log to the tools, and gear by mistake.
I flagged it, maybe DS will move it to the main area, I left a report to that effect.
Now that I moved it, I can't move it again, lack of permissions.
Sorry, but Shit Happens.

Here's a Encore Brand, Made in Japan 70s Hollow body I did some work on yesterday and today.
I rewound both pickups, put in new Mojotone CTS 500k Pots, and a new mojo 3 way toggle switch.
Completely rewired it all with shielded cable.
Not sure what kind of Pickups these are.
They are a low wind Humbucker similar to Gretsch FilterTrons, I think.
they had some large 42 HFV wire on them.
I went back with 42 PE.
It is now very quiet, and sounds great.
If you have any info on the pickups or the Encore Guitar that would be great!

A friend of mine, Corona Blue, and I traded some pickup parts.
He sent me 1 Unoriented A5 rough bar magnet.
I installed it in the neck pickup of my Agile LP Copy.
It sounds great, the smooth highs of A2, and more bottom like regular A5.
Give them a try.

A couple or so years ago I got back into electric guitar after a long break since my teens and early twenties. I've learned how to install a Jimmy Page wiring scheme in my dot, wind pickups, build some amps, and also a 1x12 cabinet. I wouldn't have had a clue how to do any of that if it wasn't for the internet and people generously giving their help and advice on forums such as this.

That's the real story of the internet age. Never mind the media's focus on fraud and porn, or the craze for "selfies" where the gurning idiot who used to sneak into the background of an outside broadcast is now centre frame holding the camera: the power of the internet age is that everyone - whoever and wherever they are - no longer has any excuse not to wind their own pickups.

Fender Double Slug Humbucker

I just got done rewinding a Humbucker from a strat bridge pickup.
It looks like a regular humbucker, except with double slugs.
It is real tall, with a regular nickel baseplate like a PAF but shorter legs.
When I tore into it, It has a fiber ckt board between the bobbins and the baseplate.
The bobbins were tall, and measured .350" between the flats.
the slugs went through the bobbins and thru the ckt board, and the slugs bottomed out on the baseplate.
The start and finish leads came out the bobbin and soldered to the bottom of the board.
The 4 wire cable soldered to the traces on the Ckt Board.
The wire was 43 SPN, and measured 7K DCR per bobbin.
I rewound it a bit different per my instructions, and wax potted it!
Anyone Else run into a Fender pickup like this?

I took the Fender Double Ceramic Humbucker back to the guitar store today.
This is how the pickup is put together with wiring colors.
Both coils are wound CCW.
The slug coil towards the bridge(normally the screw coil), White start lead, black finish lead.
The Slug Coil toward the neck, red start lead, green finish lead.
In the guitar, the white and red start leads are tied together at the split switch.
The Black lead is grounded to the Vol. Pot back.
The Green lead is connected to the other side of Split switch.
The green lead is doubled with a white wire that goes to the strat 5-way switch.
Functionally, output is applied to the green finish lead(top coil) ground is applied to the black finish lead(bottom coil).
The two start leads are tied together.
When the split switch is closed, output is applied to the Start leads, activating the bottom coil.
Fender went out of their way to do everything 180 degrees compared to a normal conventional humbucker.

Had a set of Zebra Dirty Fingers Humbuckers from a 1980 Gibson Sonex in the shop today from a local guitar technician. I'm guessing Dirty Fingers based on other stuff I've read.

Was asked to remove the original 2 X 1 conductor braided shield/ground wiring and replace with a 4 conduction, ground, foil shield setup.

Double Screw Bobbins with 3 Magnets per pickup (n-s, s-n, n-s). When I opened up the package, I hadn't realized there was going to be a copper shield layer around the set of coils.

Output P/U A:
Cream Side: 8.15kΩ
Black Side: 8.13kΩ

Output P/U B:
Cream Side: 7.93kΩ
Black Side: 8.4kΩ

The combined output for the original serial hookup was ~ 16.3kΩ as per above @ 74.4°F. To fit ~ 8kΩ on each bobbin, I'm guessing 44 gauge wire.

Just thought I'd pass along the spec's and some pic's for those that might be interested.

That wiring layout should be about the quietest possible.
The Grounded start lead of one coil puts ground next to the steel inside that coil.
Tying the finish to start of the next coil, then putting the output on the finish of that coil.
Tying the output to the finish of the second coil, puts the output as far from ground as possible.
The only down side, is the north coil is wound CCW, and the south coil is wound CW, causing the maker to wind coils in different directions.
