I think there should be a plan for how to communicate with each other if the site goes down while Steve is out of commission. Something like posting on thegearpage.net or a FB group or something. When I couldn't access the site I was checking those places looking for some sort of news of what was going on and there wasn't anything. Presumably Steve controls the MEF twitter account too?

I didn't know there was an MEF Twitter account. But this forum is the only social media I participate in. And I expect this is the case for a lot of posters here. Though that may not apply to the members that DON'T post. Which are probably mostly bots but also younger guys that just want to learn from the rich resources here but don't participate.

I'm still working on Steve's actual circumstances. When I know and depending on what I learn I may instigate a "sign in" program to inform applying members of what may be in the future for this forum and/or a landing place for it's constutuency. But this is still waiting on indeterminate circumstances.

I have an update about Steve from another family member that was good enough to return my call. Steve has been suffering a medical condition since March. This is consistent with the timeline we've already recognized. He remains hospitalized and is unavailable to the forum. The prognosis is good though. I'm not well informed other than this is not a teminal condition and his return is expected. But the time line is indeterminate. This was a very amiceable exchange and I should be able to keep in contact with this person. So there may yet be an avenue if push comes to shove. But for the moment I'm hopeful for Steve's return.

            Seems I was wrong.
Actually the MEF remembers me, no new log-in required.
But the anti-virus prevents re-connecting after each site refresh, requiring me to do 3 "ignore" steps every time.

Chuck, thanks for the update, glad to hear that Steve is on a path to recovery. Thanks for reaching out to his family and being supportive. As important as MEF is to many of us, to his family it probably the least of their concerns.

Thanks so much for the update, Chuck- and for your efforts to get it. The news that he is expected to recover is fantastic. The main thing here, of course, is Steve's health. This forum, as much as we love it, takes a back seat to that. Hoping for the best.

Great news Chuck, thanks. And 'get well soon' wishes to tboy.

Plus, I'll take the opportunity to mention the 'donate' button at the top of the page. He may not be able to use them for medical expenses, but they will be there for him when he is ready to do whatever he decides with the forum.
As my recent donation was accepted, I'm assuming they go directly to some bank account.

(For those who wish to allow the donation to be used for medical costs, perhaps in the 'note' area of the donation, something like 'may be used for medical expenses' would be sufficient for any legal issues.)

Just in case it's not covered already you can log in using firefox and chrom by using a private browsing window and accepting the certificate risk. I came to know this from the peavey forum which had a thread about this here https://forums.peavey.com/viewtopic.php?f=17&p=341784

Update regarding Steve (tboy). It's reported (for the moment) that he may be out of the hospital soon. He'll be under the care of a family member but that probably doesn't preclude him having access to the forum. Fingers crossed.

I was telling my wife about the forum dilemma.
She said she hoped the maid didn't pull the server plug for a place to plug the vacuum.
Or stick the server in a yard sale!

Although it's really none of my business (whatever ails Steve), I can't help but think of all the things that could take me out at my age. I think Steve and I are pretty close in age, the Sunn site has a little section that posts your name the week of your birthday. At any rate, we all need to respect Steve's privacy and show the same respect to his family.

I wonder how long a server can run unattended without certificates, updates and maintenance.
My laptops get rebooted every few days.
I put them on standby in between.
                            Looks like uncharted territory.
I can think of many mishap scenarios, none of them too good.
Maybe he will be fine, and be back soon, that would be best scenario!

Servers if built right can be redundant. dual failover power supplies, Raid arrays. ECC memory.
Certificates equal trust saying this server is trustworthy.
updates not done or up to date can increase vulnerabilities or likeliness of attack
maintenance a corrupted database will cause odd quirks until it kills itself.

But the main focus is sending our Good Vibes to Tboy. He needs our support.

My concern is the forum members that are not savvy or willing to barge through the security cert issue losing association with the time line. We have about a hundred posters and innumerous guests (mostly bots I think, but many real person "lurkers" too). These are people that could fall by the wayside if things aren't corrected soon. There is probably already some damage and loss. Only a few regulars are skirting the cert right now. When I keyed on this moment there was only T on line as a member. That's typical since the cert expired.

I don't mean to push Steve but he may be out of the hospital at this point and so I might use my connection to inquire about what we might do in his stead to affirm the cirtification. Just so the forum is accessible as soon as possible to the astranged lest we start losing members.I do care sbout Steve pirimarily. I also care about what he's created here. For him and my own reasons. I'll report when I know anything.
