That was actually from one of his instructional videos, and was staged. Note he says "I was gonna do the little humor thing", and if you watch closely,...

There are various brands and price-point options, but I keep an MG Chemicals soldermask pen and a bottle of corona dope for higher voltage applications handy...

The wiring in your picture is correct (remembering that your B+ comes from pin 8 and not pin 2), though of course you should be using diodes rated for more...

Did you fit backup silicon diodes on the rectifier socket like I recommended? If so I wonder if you've made a wiring error that's leaving the silicon diodes...

I'll bet it's just this with parts beefed up enough to get approvals. Their long standing product Hum X is the same, but with much lower rated parts (1N400x...Last edited by Greg Robinson; 03-18-2024, 08:00 PM.

Silicon diodes in series with the tube rectifier plates. 1N4007 does not have adequate voltage rating, as for full wave rectification the voltage rating must...

Quite right, I was thinking about the circuit incorrectly. I was thinking about it like a diode with resistance added rather than feeding it.
I still...

The upgraded DCA75 even does curve tracing when connected to a computer by usb. Haven't picked one up yet but have been meaning to.

How much of the soft clipping is due to the fact a tube is used, and how much is due to the 100k (plus 220Ω in series, negligible {EDIT: would actually...Last edited by Greg Robinson; 03-17-2024, 12:42 PM. Reason: Rewrote final sentence for better clarity and some further info.

Ok, regardless of tube rectified or solid state, 500V rated caps for the 22uF would be better anyway, so that's good. And the higher zener voltage will mean...

Zeners are backwards - they need to be reverse biased to get the zener/avalanche voltage - in forward biased mode they just act like regular silicon diodes...

Ok, just did some looking. Mouser has Neutrik S4 style with a make contact: NMJ6HCD2-SM (SM on the end of the part number indicates "sleeve make",...

The phenomenon is called dielectric absorption. The wikipedia article is as good a place to start as anywhere.

Chuck, if you're having trouble with burning with a router, could be a few causes - dull router bits, dirty/gummed up bits (wood resins), insufficient dust/chip...

I like to use a router with circle jig, which is just a stick with holes for different radii that slips over a pin. Here's an example. You certainly don't...

Sure looks like the labelling is wrong - the side with the faston connectors it's obvious the connector labelled + is connected to the ground plane.
