UPDATE - since a "funeral" or "visitation" or whatever you want to call it just wouldn't have been his type of thing, we're holding an "Enzo Event" on October 1. It's a potluck/open house style event from 1-4 in Mason, Michigan. The address is:

The forum is orphaned.
We all knew Mr. Douglas McCallum as Enzo. It is very difficult to come to terms with the idea that there will never be more posts with this signature. He was a unique specialist and, most importantly, a unique person. He was distinguished by both knowledge and experience, and willingness to help.
Everyone who was lucky enough to contact him directly, or in the forum, will always remember him.

With this new fangled Internet thing, there really isn't a way to say thanks and honor someone like Enzo. What could we do ? Re-name MEF; Mister Enzo's Forum ? How about a page on Wikipedia ? You know those phrases that get abbreviated with all caps ? WWED: What Would Enzo Do ?

I've been thinking for some years how all of the Enzo personal stories and recollections, methodologies and philosophies could all be consolidated and made accessible to all. When people posted problems here directly for his attention, he used to point out that the forum wasn't just him, and there were plenty of other people who could assist. I agree - the forum is the collective mind - but Enzo was so much more than a purely technical reply and you always got that unique Enzo charm and spin in his posts. I liken his narrative and enjoyable style to Uncle Tom McCahill, from the long-gone Mechanix Illustrated magazine. It would be a real tribute to consolidate and index all of the meaningful Enzo material. When asked a few years ago about writing a book he said he had some ideas that were at the time "just a pile of notebooks". I hope those are preserved and see the light of day. The task would be to extract all of the meaningful content form the "just change the fuse..." on-liners and edit it all together.

This made me think of the website sheldonbrown.com, which is a collection of DIY bike repair and maintenance tutorials that was set up as a tribute to Sheldon Brown who was kind of the Enzo of bike repair. Over time others have added to the knowledge base but it is still a tribute to someone they respected and many looked up to as a mentor.

I'm actually considering attending. Does Lansing have a big airport, (flights from all over the US) or do you have to get a connecting flight from Detroit ? Is it practical to rent a car and drive from Detroit ?

I drove from Saginaw to Lancing when I visited Enzo. That's about the same distance as the Detroit to Lansing drive so my input is that the drive is certainly practical. I'm going to be in Saginaw for a week in mid September. So close to making the 1 Oct date but I cannot change the travel timing.

Once you get out of Detroit, much of the drive is through farm land and is very pleasant.

Easy drive - two turns, and 90 minutes from Detroit. Lansing also has a major airport, and there are LOTS of Lansing to Detroit flights as part of a larger round trip.

Kudos to/for you if you can. Maybe I shouldn't bother saying, there's no disrespect intended but I just couldn't possibly get the time off work or manage the financial aspect. I only come clean about it because I'm sure there's not a member among us that wouldn't do it if they could.

Just an FYI my wife recently flew into Grand Rapids MI (which is an hour from Lansing) direct from Portland on Allegiant and she loved it. It was also much cheaper than the big carriers. I don't think they have a flight from Dallas to GRR but they do from Austin. We've regularly flown into Detroit and Flint and Chicago and she liked Grand Rapids best, Flint was second. Rental cars are also often cheaper at the smaller airports.

Last year when i flew into Grand Rapids from fl. When the plane banked to make the turn to land. Someone had done some of that UFO cornfield stuff. It was a nice suprise for my very first time in an airplane, yeah the back of the plane sucks.
