Actually the one I use for Strat Neck P/Us, says on the Spool it is .00297" 42HPN.
The Other Spool of 42HPN is .00287" I use it for Strat Bridge and Middle.
I have the 41 SPN, and it is IMO just a bit large for Single coils.
Then on the other end of the spectrum, I have the new Red 42SPN and it measures .0025"
I like it for my mini blades.
Not much Space on the mini blades and the small red is a good fit.

        • Any of you guys make any Strat SCs with the plastic bobbins?
I've been asked to make some cheap P/Us, that sound good.
We would be putting them in a cheap line of PartCaster Guitars.
I was asked if the plastic bobbin, but still with A5 Rods, would be a cheap alternative?

I wonder what size magnets they use?

I haven't made any, but I have tested quite a few of the commercial ones. The ones with the round actual alnico magnets (not the slugs with the ceramics P 90 style) weren't too bad. I am thinking particularly of the ones that were in the Japanese fotoflame strats, and in Mexican strats say around 2000 or so.

The magnets the GPUSA bobbins take are 5mm which is .196

So a .195 would fit in there I guess.
I just went to the shop and looked around.
I thought I had one of those bobbins, but no cigar.
Hell, you can't ever make things cheap enough! lol
I get any cheaper, I'll have to start paying when I make a set of pickups.

One problem I have had trying to repair those is that the plastic is real easy to melt at the eyelets. It might be a pain. You're looking at around $4.50 with the magnets. There are the Mojo pre-assembled ones, as one option. Another thing, if you don't mind my magnet stagger, you could sub them out to me, I'm dirt cheap. I think I could get someplace in between those prices, assembled and lacquered to help a friend if I could use up some of the .187 A5's I have bought a ton of long ago.

                  My DSL died.
I think it was being worked on.
The Maint. Window for Phone Tech work is after Midnight, and before 6AM.
                  It slowly came back up.
Yes I may have to contract out to you.
Do you press in the Magnets?
I hammer them in one at a time.
                  Do you have .187x .688, &.710s?
                  I do most with that.
                  The plastic bobbins looked easy.
Just stick them in and maybe glue them after the stagger is set.

                  • I'm not big of plastic Strat bobbins. How much can it cost you in materials to make a proper Forbon/Alnico pickup... $8, maybe $9 tops? Geeze, I'd send you the parts but the postage is probably more than you would save over plastic.

Meanwhile, this 50+ year old PE is stretching a lot. I also missed the faint writing on the spool where it says.027.5"- just after .026.5" so it actually says 0265"-0275" so it's fairly inconsistent which I figured it would be but the stretching is a drag.

I wound another Strat pickup with it but with less tension this time.
500 winds less (7,850 down from 8,350) came out to 400 ohms less but the Inductance was actually a bit higher. The stuff is good for vintage rewinds but I wouldn't want to use it on a daily basis.

Maybe I will start dumping the older stuff that I have. Modern wire is so much easier to work with

Yes, I know how and can buy all the parts.
Trying to come up with something real fast and cheap.
but, with good wire, and good Alnico magnets.
Probably won't do it, no money in it.

I don't know.... If you can make plastic sound the same as the vintage bobbins then go for it. Just make sure you dont put your name on em

At my age, what the hell difference does it make!
I wish I could find that bobbin I had, I would wind one and see.
I make all kinds of stuff anymore, I figure the plastic bobbin can be fine tuned like anything else.
Like I said if things have to be too cheap, I just won't do it.

I think I will tell the guy to buy GFS Pickups.

I don't blame ya, I've actually been pretty busy with pickups in my free time. I have two more shops that I'm building for.
A lot of single coils, Strat, P-90's and a few Tele pickups too. Sold a few sets of full size PE hummers last month as well.

Cant quit the day job...with everybody and their brother building pickups these days you need a gimmick to sell enough pickups to make a living. Maybe I'll start a waiting list, that usually works

Most of the differences in the sound samples I hear on builders sites can be accomplished with a few EQ adjustments on the amp.

Guitarists sure are a trendy bunch. Vintage tone is back big time, it's a good thing that I rarely ever sold any of my 40 year collection of amps, guitars, pedals ect or I'd be shopping for something.
