I would assemble and solder all but these two before installing LCD and PIC, to reduce handling of and thus risk to static-sensitive components.
Bzzzttt wrong the LCD is in the factory "static bag", the PIC is in a short length of factory "static DIP tube".

I prefer a ground strap over the equal-charge method, the ground strap works 100% of the time.

PS; and don't wear polyester clothes or tennis shoes (trainers) on carpet while working with them, both those scenarios can generate quite a charge.

    • UPDATE:

How do the following phrases relate to us?

      Elvis has left the building....

      Houston we have lift-off...

      drum roll please......

      THE PACKAGES HAVE BEEN SHIPPED!

In the voice of our beloved Jerry Garcia "what a long, strange trip it's been".

      .
      .
      .
      .

Also, a new development, one of our participants had to back-out at the last minute for personal reasons (they will go un-named) but the upside is that there is one (1) more kit up for grabs. Anyone interested please PM me, the cost will be that persons share ($85).

      • Having tried to use the simple thanks button and not getting it to work, I'd like to thank RedHouse and all of those who worked so hard to see this thing through.

I can't wait to get the kit.

        Thanks again!

        • UPDATE:

Everyone here has different skill levels, one of our members was asking for some detailed build insrtructions so I made a simple pictoral-tutorial which is available here:

          Build Tutorial

It's got like 40 pics so you should do a "save as" and save it to your local hard drive.

Note that the gaussmeter can be built any way you wish, this tutorial is not for experienced builders or an invitation to debate construction practices, but simply offered as a helper for those amoung us who have little or no experience building circuitry.

          • Hey Brad, you're the best guy to manage Group Buys!
I do have the skills to build it but when I saw your tutorial I feel that I must say a big thanks even if I don't need it. You're great!

It's very well done, and will likely head off some trouble.

I assume that everybody has a suitable soldering iron et al.

Good point Joe, I just edited the webpage and addressed that in the tutorial.

It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure. — Albert Einstein
